Karina N. Gonzalez Herrera, PhD, is the Assistant Director of Diversity and Minority Affairs in the Division of Medical Sciences at Harvard Medical School. Born in Guatemala, Karina and her family immigrated to the United States at the age of 11. She attended California State University, San Marcos where she received her B.S. and M.S. degrees. She is a graduate of the Biological and Biomedical Sciences Program at Harvard University. As a graduate student, she worked in the laboratory of Dr. Marcia Haigis where she focused on her interests in cancer biology and metabolism. In addition to her love for scientific research, over the years Karina has truly enjoyed teaching and mentoring underrepresented minority students by volunteering and participating in various programs at Harvard University. Karina aims to recruit and support underrepresented minority students with the goal of promoting a more diverse, supportive, and welcoming community at Harvard.
